Academics
We have determined our unique educational philosophy based upon our mission, vision, and values while taking into consideration the needs of the Catholic community of Middle Tennessee whom God has asked us to serve. We have found beauty and truth in many different methodologies, including Montessori, Charlotte Mason, Classical, and Modern philosophies, and we have discerned that a blend of several pre-established methods is best suited for Koinonia.
First and foremost, we believe that education should be foundational—that children deserve systematic instruction that covers all concepts thoroughly and without leaving gaps in knowledge, especially in the fundamental subjects of English Language Arts and Mathematics. As our instructors co-teach with parents, our joint goal is to identify what each unique child needs in order to lay a strong foundation of learning on which the child can build for the rest of his or her life.
We also believe that children in their vocations as students deserve an education that fosters both wonder and truth. Imparting knowledge through instruction is a vital component of education, but it is fruitless when administered before the student’s mind and heart are open to learning. We believe that nurturing wonder provides the fertile ground needed for educators to plant the seeds of knowledge and for students to become self-motivated, lifelong learners. The quest for knowledge is at its core a search for truth, and as Catholics, we recognize that the fullness of truth is found in the Catholic faith. Thus, a Catholic worldview is vital to a comprehensive education.

When assembling our curriculum, we approached each subject individually to determine the best method for teaching that particular subject. We chose materials that delivered a foundational education while fostering wonder and truth, and we prioritized programs that will challenge our students while remaining accessible to and teachable by parents in keeping with our hybrid model. When possible, we chose Catholic options that met these requirements.
